EAN vs UPC: what's the difference?
They look almost identical and often scan interchangeably — but EAN and UPC are not the same. Here is what actually separates them, and which one you need.
EAN and UPC are both retail barcodes that encode a product's GTIN (Global Trade Item Number). The practical difference comes down to length and geography: EAN-13 has 13 digits and dominates Europe and most of the world, while UPC-A has 12 digits and is the standard in the United States and Canada.

They are more alike than they look
A UPC-A is, technically, an EAN-13 whose first digit is zero. Add a leading 0 to any 12-digit UPC and you get the equivalent 13-digit EAN. That is why almost every modern scanner reads both without any special configuration — the underlying number system is the same GTIN, just written at two lengths.
Which one should you use?
Follow the market and the retailer:
- Selling in Europe, the UK, Asia, Latin America, most of the world → use EAN-13.
- Selling primarily in the US or Canada → use UPC-A, which is what North American retail systems expect on the packaging.
- Not sure, or selling in several regions → EAN-13 is the safer default, because UPC scanners read it too.
Always confirm with your specific retailer or marketplace — some have explicit requirements about which format and which digit count they store.
What about EAN-8?
When a package is genuinely too small for a full EAN-13, GS1 can issue a short EAN-8 (8 digits). Use it only when EAN-13 will not physically fit — it has limited capacity and is issued sparingly.
